Is an EOB a bill?
Short answer: usually no. An EOB is from your insurer. A medical bill is from a provider or billing company. Confusing them is one of the most common “help with my bill” moments.
EOB (from the plan)
Shows how a claim was processed.
- Often labeled Explanation of Benefits
- May say “this is not a bill”
- Lists allowed amounts and plan payment
- You typically don’t mail payment with the EOB itself
Bill (from the provider)
Asks you to pay a balance.
- From hospital, clinic, lab, or billing service
- Shows amount due and pay-by instructions
- May arrive after the EOB
- Should be compared to the EOB
